SEO – Search Engine Optimisation
Each time I meet with a client there seems to be confusion or lack of knowledge around SEO. I have decided to focus this post on SEO.
SEO is a huge area with hundreds of know factors, predictions and many we will never know. This Email will only lightly touch the basics with some easy tips that anyone can do to improve their SEO.
What is SEO?
It is the process of getting traffic from the free, organic, editorial or natural search results on search engines like Google.
By understanding how search engines rank websites, one can optimize a website to maximize its chances of ranking well for relevant searches.
However, search engine algorithms continue to change, making it essential for online businesses to stay up-to-date with best practices to claim high rankings for relevant keywords.
Where to Start?
Research is always a good place to start. Find a page on your website that talks about a specific service or product, one that your customers will be looking for. Find a keyword or phrase word that you think people will be asking Google when looking for your product/service/topic.
I use www.wordtracker.com to look at the monthly search volume to gauge how many times the keyword is searched each month.
The Content
What you need to do is repeat your keyword several times throughout your content. Generally, you want your keyword to appear 2 to 5 percent of the time. For example, if you’re writing an article of 500 words, you’ll want your keyword to appear at least 10 times but no more than 30.
Meta & Title Tags
Here is where you may need a hand. Title & Description Tags are what the search engines use to display your website in the search.
Title Tags
These should be 50 – 60 Characters long and contain your keyword.
Description Tags
Description Tags should be 155 – 160 Characters long and contain your keyword early in the description.
Ideally, you would call the page or post and use a header on the page which is also your keyword.
